Little & Friday’s Chocolate Cherry Cake & New Residents

DSC_0062

Happy New Year Everyone!

I have a little obsession for Little & Friday cakes, fortunately I don’t venture close to their cafes often otherwise I may look as round as this chocolate cake. For those of you who live in Auckland you may have already visited one of their little cake shops and experienced their baking delights. They’re what I call ‘real’ cakes, they are cakes with substance, traditional in texture but modern in appearance.

I have not listed the recipe as I have not bought the book yet, although it is on my wish list. National Radio have the recipe here, permission given to publish by the owner. The recipe came out exactly how I had experienced them at Little & Friday, although I did use cherries instead of raspberries.

We have new residents at our house, Beryl, Thelma and Nerys. They are three adopted hens which had been abandoned and we happily gave them a new home…. well actually a very elaborate coop and free range of the garden. They were all a little scruffy and dirty when they arrived and we were told they weren’t laying eggs but we have big hearts and decided even if they don’t lay we would look after them. A good bath, yes we bathed them! A good diet and they are now laying and they donated the eggs for my chocolate cake.

If you come from Northern England you might recognise their name? They come from the cast and actors of a TV series called the Liver Birds which was set in Liverpool, my beautiful home town. The Liver Birds are also an iconic emblem that represents the city of Liverpool, dating back to the 1300s. Two statues can aslo be see towering above the port on the Royal Liver Buildings.

You’re a better human than me…I would have hidden it until friends went home. Maybe THATS why I have 2 friends?

I don’t think my husband was too happy at me taking it to friends to share, he wanted to keep it all! I did save him a very large slice.

  3. Oh my golly gosh, this is gorgeous but its 3.5 cups of sugar plus the chocolate might not fit into my refined sugar-free diet at the moment. But I can still appreciate its beauty.

  8. That recipe looks amazing. We have so many cherries coming into season at the moment, a decadent chocolate cake would be the perfect way to use them. Thanks for the inspiration!

  14. How wonderful that you adopted these lovely ladies! Was it a lot of work to prepare for them?

we bought a flat pack coop which didn’t take long to assemble. The garden area is mainly fenced anyway and we just needed to do a little more fencing, they don’t wander far but perhaps because they had been inside for quite a while. They are very entertaining to watch, they are part of the family already.

  16. Looks gorgeous, Alli. Even though I don’t do a great deal of baking, I too have the Little & Friday cookbook on my wishlist – figure it might inspire me to get the baking tins out a little more. Love that you used cherries in this, as well as eggs from your newly adopted “chook” sisters.

Happy New Year to you, my friend, and definitely hoping that you and P manage to come down to Nelson sometime this year.

  21. Mmmm cake! Chocolate cake at that, it’s beautiful with the cherries on top. I love The Liver Birds reference and you’ve made me want to adopt some hens too, it would give the cats something to obsess over anyway!!

    January 8, 2013

Yes one of our cats is a little obsessed over them, although we do have a baby chick too which is what he has his eye one. Mother hen is very protective though, the cat went for the chick and Mother picked him on the nose. He has kept a wide birth if the hens since.

Hi Al. First time I have been on my laptop for yonk’s…….It was nice to read about your rescueing your little chuck’s. I know I am the worst mother on the planet, for not keeping in touch with my babies, as I should, Will try to do better, as from today. When I opened my laptop, just now, there were 50 emails to, (mainly) GET RID OF…..speak soon. Lots of love and big hugs xxxxx
